Rob Pillay

I have been keeping Koi for around 20 years. The majority of this time I have been keeping high class show Koi. I take great pride in getting the Koi I buy to develop in the very best possible way. My aim it to keep Koi looking good for a long period of time.

My pond is 17,500 Gallons and I originally had a vortex system with matting chambers. I then changed the system to incorporate K1 media. My Koi did very well in those systems, I won many major awards including winning the Grand Champion award 5 times at our national and 11 times at my Durban district show.

I am in constant contact with two off my koi dealer/friends namely, Dennis Wordsworth and Tim Waddington from the UK and in 2012 they both told me about the new revolution in koi pond filtration “The-Qube”.

At first like many others I was uncertain with trying a brand new filtration system because my existing system worked very well for me. My success at Koi shows speaks for itself and having a very special collection of show winning koi, I must admit I had my worries. However, in saying that both Dennis and Tim never let me down before. I have known them since 2000.

My pond was due a big upgrade. The fibreglass was starting to look old and was peeling off in some places. I was going to have to empty the entire pond anyway. I took the advice of my two friends and purchased one 800 Qube and two 600 Qube's which were flown to me from the UK.

Whilst work was being carried out on my main pond all the fish were moved to my second 3000 Gallon pond. My new Qube's arrived at my home in July 2012 a few days before Dennis arrived from the UK. Dennis spent a week with me and engineered the installation of the new Qube's.

The new pond did take a little longer than we thought to complete due to lots of rain. In October 2012 we finally got the pond running. We fired the filters up and ran the pond for a week with no Koi in the system. During this time we cleaned the Qube's not because they needed it but because we wanted to get to know the units. Once done, it's a very simple and quick process.

The following week I moved some of the smaller Koi into the new pond. They seemed to enjoy the new surroundings very much and within a few hours were feeding happily. During this time my water went slightly milky which was pretty normal when starting a new pond. It took a week for that to clear and thereafter the pond shone.

Over the next couple of weeks the remainder of the Koi were added and the pond was running perfectly. I've listed below the positives that the Qube Filtration Systems have done for my pond:

  • Unbelievable water clarity
  • My fish now eat from my hands even some go-sanke
  • No foul odour in filter room when cleaning and discharging the filters
  • Very little water wastage
  • My large koi swim around the pond more activitly, which I have never had in the past
  • My large koi never fed before 10:30am in the past and now when I get to the pond at 7am they are looking for food and eat like they have never seen food before
  • The overall quality and white skin on my Koi have vastly improved
  • Filters are very quick and easy to clean
  • Filters work efficiently with low current pumps

In view of all the above I would fully recommend The-Qube's to anyone wishing to improve their filtration system, save on the most precious commodity God has given us (fresh water) and lastly improve the overall skin quality and longevity of their living jewels.
